The Scar

“I’m leaving!” my little brother screamed in his soprano voice.  The door slammed.  I could hear the bounce of tires on cement as he took his bike from the garage.
My sister looked at me, her mind working.  Their argument had been heated.  I could still see and taste the smoke that both had created.
“Go after him.”  Her voice, like a steel trap, brought me away from silent reverie.  I went outside, gravel under my feet as I retrieved my ten-speed. It did not take long.
He was just in front of me, both tires spinning.  I tried to grab a hold of his arm but the downward slope carried him faster than I thought it would.
I pedaled to catch up, my bike’s chain whining, whirring like an airplane’s engine.  I heard a voice call out to me.  “Bump his tire.”  The clattering of the stones by the side of the road was too loud for thinking.
My feet pedaled faster, bringing me closer and closer.  He looked back and saw my intent, trying to escape.  My speed was too great to detain or avoid.
Inch by inch; time started to slow as I crept closer.  We were almost touching.  Our spokes spake as one.  No time for thought.  I hit him, slowly, so slowly.
Our tires met, my front to his back.  Smoke, intoxicating clouds of scent, slowly rose to meet my nostrils.  Burning rubber.  I looked up and I was flying, slowly flying forward as he pedaled.
My bike was gone.  I skidded.  My knees, elbows, hands, feeling the opposite flight of the gravel kissing them deeply, too deeply for words.  I stopped in a roar of pain.  The engine had died, crashing, falling out of the sky.  Slowly I stood, no flight left.  I was grounded.
He stopped, suspended, turning, and banking to face me with horror.  I left him, my plane, the road, flight path, walked back to the house, slowly, in a haze of clouds.
They ran to meet me.  I passed them by, entering the house, calm.  My flying days were over.  I had been grounded.  That was all.
